The Story
The 2007 Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal Golf Club was a tale of two narratives: a blowout U.S. team victory and a singular moment of Canadian glory. Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player captained the sides in Canada, with the U.S. team arriving as heavy favorites. They played like it, dismantling the International squad in the team sessions to effectively decide the Cup before Sunday. However, the week is best defined by the Sunday Singles match between Canadian hero Mike Weir and world No. 1 Tiger Woods. With the Cup already mathematically decided or nearly so, the massive Canadian gallery poured all their energy into Weir. In a thrilling back-and-forth battle, Weir defeated Woods 1-up on the final hole, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. While the International Team lost decisively 19.5-14.5, Weir's victory provided a face-saving highlight. It showed that even in defeat, the Presidents Cup could produce electrifying match-play drama. Woody Austin also provided comic relief by falling into a lake while attempting a shot, earning the nickname "Aquaman."
