Our Legacy

The United States won 17–13 at Medinah after overturning a 10.5–7.5 deficit on the final day. The Americans took Sunday singles 9.5–2.5, with Jacob Bridgeman securing the winning point against Min Woo Lee. Brandt Snedeker captained the U.S. side against Geoff Ogilvy’s International Team.

The 2022 Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte was a showcase of the next generation of American stars. Captain Davis Love III led a powerhouse U.S. team that, despite missing several key players to LIV Golf, proved to be one of the deepest squads in history. They stormed out of the gates, taking a commanding 8-2 lead after two days, utilizing their familiarity with the course and superior putting on Quail Hollow's treacherous greens. Trevor Immelman's International Team, labeled massive underdogs, showed tremendous heart on Saturday. Led by young phenom Tom Kim, who provided the emotional spark, they split the morning session and won the afternoon Four-balls 3-1 to trim the deficit to four points. Kim's clutch birdies and emotional celebrations became the defining images of the week for the Internationals. However, Sunday Singles belonged to the Americans. Jordan Spieth capped a perfect 5-0-0 week—joining an elite club of players to achieve the feat—while Max Homa also went 4-0-0 in his debut. Xander Schauffele delivered the clinching point, and the U.S. secured a 17.5-12.5 victory. The event highlighted the sheer depth of American talent and affirmed their dominance on home soil.

The 2017 Presidents Cup at Liberty National Golf Club, set against the stunning backdrop of the Manhattan skyline, was a procession of American dominance. Captained by Steve Stricker, the U.S. Team threatened to end the matches on Saturday – a feat never before achieved – by building an insurmountable lead. They dominated the Foursomes and Four-ball sessions with clinical precision, led by the dynamic duo of Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed. The event was historically significant for the presence of three former U.S. Presidents—Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama—who joined the opening ceremony and first tee, underscoring the event's growing prestige. On the course, Dustin Johnson went 4-0-1, while Phil Mickelson, playing in his 12th consecutive Cup, continued to defy age with key points. The International Team, led by Nick Price, found themselves in a deep hole early, trailing 14.5-3.5 heading into Sunday singles. Although they rallied in Sunday Singles to win the session 7.5-4.5, avoiding a historic blowout, the result was never in doubt. The U.S. won 19-11, marking their seventh consecutive victory and highlighting the formidable depth of American golf.

The 2013 Presidents Cup was played at Muirfield Village in Ohio, which had previously hosted the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup. U.S. Captain Fred Couples led a team that felt comfortable on the Jack Nicklaus-designed course, facing an International Team led by Nick Price. The week was marred by heavy rain, forcing delays and compressed scheduling, but the U.S. team managed the conditions superiorly. Tiger Woods, battling back stiffness, once again proved to be the closer. For the third consecutive Presidents Cup, Woods secured the clinching point for the United States, defeating Richard Sterne in Sunday Singles. The partnership of Woods and Matt Kuchar was particularly effective, as was the duo of Steve Stricker and Jordan Spieth. Despite a spirited effort from International standouts like Jason Day and Graham DeLaet, the Americans maintained a comfortable buffer throughout the weekend. The 18.5-15.5 victory marked the fifth straight win for the U.S., prompting discussions about format changes to help level the playing field for the International Team in future editions.

The 2009 Presidents Cup at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco is often remembered for the dominance of Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker. The pairing was unstoppable, becoming the first duo in Presidents Cup history to go 4-0 together in a single week. Woods capped his incredible performance by crushing Y.E. Yang 6&5 in Sunday Singles, finishing a perfect 5-0-0. Captained by Fred Couples, the U.S. Team controlled the matches from the start. The International Team, led by Greg Norman, struggled to find answers for the relentless American putting. Despite bold roster moves by Norman, the talent gap was evident. The iconic image of the week was Woods and Stricker reading putts together, a symbol of a rare American partnership that perfectly meshed. The U.S. cruised to a 19.5-14.5 victory, affirming their dominance and setting the stage for a new era of American leadership under Couples.

The 2005 Presidents Cup returned to the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia, and the result was a hard-fought American victory. Following the historic tie in 2003, tensions and competitive fire were high. Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player returned as captains, continuing their friendly but fierce rivalry. The match was close throughout the first three days, but the U.S. depth in Sunday Singles proved the difference. Chris DiMarco, known for his grit, became the hero. Facing Stuart Appleby in the final match on the 18th hole, DiMarco drained a crucial birdie putt to clinch the Cup for the United States, sparking a wild celebration. The 18.5-15.5 victory re-established American control of the Cup. It was a week characterized by clutch putting and the emergence of DiMarco as a premier match-play competitor, proving that the U.S. could deliver in the most pressure-packed moments.

The 2000 Presidents Cup at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club was one of the most lopsided editions in the competition's history. Captained by Ken Venturi, the U.S. Team arrived with a deep roster and quickly took control of the match. The U.S. team routed the Internationals 21.5-10.5, the largest margin of victory in the event's history. The International Team, led by Peter Thomson, had no answer for the American scoring depth. The U.S. swept the opening Foursomes 5-0 and never looked back. It was a week of complete dominance that led to questions about the competitive viability of the event. The American team, featuring Woods, Mickelson, and Duval, played relentless golf, leaving the International squad with too much ground to recover. It remains the most lopsided result in the history of the competition.

The 1996 Presidents Cup was a thriller that came down to the final putt. Returning to Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, Arnold Palmer captained the U.S. against Peter Thomson's Internationals. Unlike the comfortable win in 1994, this match was a dogfight. The International Team played inspired golf, keeping the matches tight heading into Sunday. In the end, it fell to Fred Couples, playing against Vijay Singh. Trailing late in his match, Couples rallied to secure a victory that tipped the scales for the Americans. The 16.5-15.5 victory was a relief for the dominant American squad and proved that the International Team was rapidly improving. It set the stage for their historic breakthrough two years later. Mark O'Meara was also a standout, going 5-0-0 for the U.S., but it was Couples' clutch finish that is most remembered.
