The 2005 Presidents Cup returned to the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia, and the result was a hard-fought American victory. Following the historic tie in 2003, tensions and competitive fire were high. Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player returned as captains, continuing their friendly but fierce rivalry. The match was close throughout the first three days, but the U.S. depth in Sunday Singles proved the difference. Chris DiMarco, known for his grit, became the hero. Facing Stuart Appleby in the final match on the 18th hole, DiMarco drained a crucial birdie putt to clinch the Cup for the United States, sparking a wild celebration. The 1996 Presidents Cup was a thriller that came down to the final putt. Returning to Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, Arnold Palmer captained the U.S. against Peter Thomson's Internationals. Unlike the comfortable win in 1994, this match was a dogfight. The International Team played inspired golf, keeping the matches tight heading into Sunday. In the end, it fell to Fred Couples, playing against Vijay Singh. Trailing late in his match, Couples rallied to secure a victory that tipped the scales for the Americans.
